End of second year party!

16/07/15

This week was the last meeting of the year. We go back at the beginning of September.

This party was organised by two girls who went up to Guides a few weeks back. All the girls came in their pyjamas with a teddy and a pillow. We shut all the curtains and turned out the lights to make it slightly darker (the curtains are pretty thin so it wasn't dangerously dark).

The girls started off by playing some games and the adults spent most of the time making sure they weren't anywhere near the tables of food we had set out. We only had one minor incident when they had a pillow fight and one girl got a bit close to the table and took out a few crisps! They also had a teddy competition where they lined up all the teddies and had a few leaders choose their favourite to win a prize.

When they were done playing the games, we let them loose on the food. I was quite surprised how many girls took fruit (we always make sure we have some but we don't force it on them). We managed to survive this party without having any spillages either, which might be a first!

Once they were done eating, it was time to hand out some badges and the shield (girls gain points for attending meetings and doing badges, then the one with the most keeps the shield for a term) before wishing them a good summer and sending them home.

This year has been quite bitty for me but it's been nice to see the girls when I've had the chance. I have my fingers crossed that next year my timetable will slightly nicer and I'll be able to help at a unit while I'm at university too - I've definitely been missing it!

Home for the Christmas party

18/12/14

Tonight was the last meeting of the term for my unit back home and I was home from university so I went to the Christmas party. This year, instead of having each girl bring an item of food, as we usually do, we used up a lot of food that was left over from various other events (biscuits and sweets) and bought some grapes, melon and pineapple to go with them.

When I arrived, I helped set up all the food with the two Young Leaders and spoke to a few girls who were happy to see me! I was also introduced to the 4 new girls who've joined since I left.

The evening was run, as it usually is, by a group of the older girls who has organised a game of pass the parcel, wrapping up a girl as a snowman in toilet paper, and a game of Honeypot (instructions here). The game of pass the parcel didn't go particularly well because the CD player they had brought wasn't loud enough for us to distinguish between the end of a song and it actually being paused.

While the girls wrapped a couple of girls up in toilet paper, the Leaders took it in turn to go into the kitchen and sign the Christmas cards for the girls. I then sat in there putting them into the envelopes while catching up with a Young Leader for a bit.

We then had the food and so I stood by the table, making sure the girls weren't taking more than their fair share and eating some food myself! I also ended up on spillage duty as 3 girls spilt their drinks (one right next to me while I was cleaning up her friends'!).

We ended the meeting with our circle and gave out cards to the girls and a few presents for the leaders before wishing them a Merry Christmas and letting them go.

It was a very relaxed evening and meant I could catch up with some Leaders and a couple of girls and I am looking forwards to the meetings and trips I am going to be able to go on in the New Year as my 2nd semester timetable still doesn't allow me time for Brownies at university.

End of year party

17/07/14

This week is the last week of term so the girls had a party. It was organised by two of the older girls in the unit, as is our norm, so Snowy Owl and the other leaders are just there to help them out. They played some games and had food (each girl was given a letter last week telling them what to bring so they didn't end up with loads of cakes and nothing else!). We will return in September for meetings but I will try and put up a couple of posts over the holiday about my Look Wider.

Last meeting of the term

03/04/14

This evening was run by two girls who are leaving this term. We like to give girls the option of running their last meeting (not all do) as it leaves some lasting memories and gives them a taste of leadership.

The girls all came dressed as famous people. There were some which we could easily guess (Cleopatra, Michael Jackson) and some that were much harder (Taylor Swift, Beth Tweddle, J.K. Rowling). I went as the Fourth Doctor (complete with 16 foot scarf!) but none of them knew who I was (although most knew of Doctor Who) so it was a bit lost on them, sadly...

We did our usual circle and show and tell at the beginning and then, after a brief word from Brown Owl about listening to as they girls had put in a lot of effort, we handed over to the two girls. They started off playing Lighthouses (rules here). The Leaders all tried to stand back and let the girls run it themselves but we did have to step in once to get the girls to listen so the game could begin. The two girls didn't move the game on very quickly so the other girls were getting bored which didn't help.

Next they judged the fancy dress competition. They had all the girls line up and they looked at all the costumes. They had printed off 4 certificates which they then wrote the names of the winners onto. It took a while for them to decide and write them out and the girls, once again, were starting to get a bit bored so Brown Owl had to hurry up the two who were writing.

They then played fishes (rules here) which worked surprisingly well for the first time in ages. We only had one dispute about whether a girl was out but Brown Owl had seen them get caught so that was resolved quickly.

In the final circle, we gave the girls an Easter egg each - which pleased them no end! Brown Owl had managed to go and buy 32 of them all in one go (although not without some odd looks and a double check with the manager that she was allowed to...)!

The meeting was generally a success, particularly as it was the girls' first try at running a meeting. It shows them all quite how hard we have to work to keep doing this week after week and, hopefully, they will appreciate the work we've put in for the 3 years they've been with us!

This was our last meeting for this term (now time for a well earned break!) so no posts for a fortnight. I'm hoping to finish my Adult Leaders over the holiday too - most of what is left is just tying up loose ends - so a post on that may be following shortly!

Happy Easter everyone!
